Golf in its purest form.
In the summer of 2009, two passionate walking golfers, and dreamers, began discussing the idea of creating a golf course and club specifically designed for walkers that would be located near Portland, Oregon.
The Walkers Course will be a semi-private, public access golf club that we hope will become a benchmark for responsible and viable golf course construction in the future. The club will be golf-focused, environmentally-sound, economical and enjoyable to play.
Oregon has a number of excellent courses and we hope that The Walkers Course will further enhance the state’s reputation as one of the premier golf destinations in North America.
Motivation Behind The Walkers Course
Portland, OR has a mild climate that is conducive to year round golf.
The summer and fall are quite dry and sunny which provides ideal playing conditions. The winter and spring can be wet, but there are many days from November through April that are fantastic for golf, especially on a well draining course. It is no surprise that passionate local golfers enjoy teeing it up twelve months a year.
Golf courses in Portland can be categorized as “parkland”, whether they are shorter classic designs or modern “championship” layouts.
Parkland courses usually have narrow tree lined fairways and small greens protected on either side by bunkers , which places a premium on accuracy off the tee and calls for precise aerial approach shots.
Since the parkland genre of design is so well represented in the area, we have decided to model The Walkers Course after the famed “Heathland” courses of England which tend to play in the spirit of a seaside links due to “firm and fast” conditions, wider fairways, little rough, cross hazards and undulating greens. These design qualities put an emphasis on the ground game and promote creativity.
The English Heathland feel of The Walkers Course – which is a style rarely seen in the United States – will complement the Scottish and Irish links flavor of Oregon’s world-class tracks on the Oregon Coast, along with the beautiful high desert courses in Central Oregon, and the local parkland gems of the Willamette Valley.
The Walkers Course will be golf in its purest form–a return to strategic, challenging, enjoyable and walkable golf that players of all levels can embrace.
The course will be short by modern standards at 6,500 yards, with no cart paths and very short green to tee transfers.
In addition to support from Oregon and Southern Washington, The Walkers Course will maintain a National/Global membership of golfers who believe that walking is essential to the enjoyment of the game.
